Being only half-Saiyan, Gohan doesn’t have the urge to constantly fight like his father or Vegeta do. Instead, he seems to have taken to only fighting when it’s absolutely necessary in order to protect himself. He’s also very gentle, just like his father. He’ll hold off all force in order to convince his opponent to change their ways—which can be considered a major fault of Gohan’s and it’s one that almost cost him a victory several times. Gohan is also rather shy, especially as a teen. This is mostly his mother’s influence, however. After the Cell Saga ended, Gohan kept to his studies. He saw it as a duty to his mother, since he’d saved the world to live up to his duty to his father. Naturally smart, Gohan excelled in most subjects—mathematics, English, sciences and history. He also doesn’t have a lot of experience interacting with others his own age and therefore can come across as naïve and easily swayed. Upon entering university, Chi Chi warned Gohan that it would be best if he could protect his identity as a Saiyan no matter what, but with his natural strength and power, this may be difficult for Gohan! He’s willing to risk it, however, for the chance to really continue his education, finally, in a public setting. Brief History: Born as the eldest son to Goku and Chi Chi, Gohan was mostly protected by his mother for the first four years of his life. After their adventurous youth, Chi Chi insisted that Gohan would be home schooled rather than allowing their son to attend regular school—despite Goku’s best protests. He was spoiled and well educated! When Gohan turned four, however, Goku took it upon himself to take Gohan to a reunion among their friends, and it was this that started Gohan’s real adventures! At the reunion, Radditz (Goku’s Saiyan brother) appears on Earth and essentially kidnaps Gohan. Goku does all he can and eventually, Gohan is rescued, but he reveals to Goku that he does have a hidden strength inside of him that Goku doesn’t want to keep hidden forever. Goku couldn’t do much to help his son after that, however, as he died in efforts of saving him. Piccolo, who has a long history with Goku, kidnaps Gohan in effort to start to train the kid in the basics of martial arts and with the art of using his chi to help him fight. He recognized the potential in the spoiled child of Chi Chi and Goku and knew that he needed to do something to bring it out. Gohan and Piccolo became friends during the fourth year of Gohan’s life when he was essentially left to learn how to become stronger on his own in the wilderness. It was so much so that when Piccolo died trying to defend Gohan, Gohan went against his mother’s wishes not too much later to do whatever it took to bring his friend back to life—including traveling into outer space to a foreign planet called Namek! There, they learn that a new terror is fighting to take control of the universe and to use the dragonballs to gain immortality—the evil Frieza. The battles become tough and difficult, but with help from Goku, the universe is safe from evil yet again. However, it’s not without another price. The planet Namek is completely destroyed in the process of destroying Frieza, and Goku takes another year out of his life to travel back to planet Earth—while Gohan, Vegeta and the others live peacefully for a short year in time. When Goku does eventually return to Earth, however, he has a surprise waiting for him. Frieza still lived, somehow, and had found his way back to Goku’s home planet. Just when Gohan and his friends were planning to attack and to fight in a battle that they thought that they were for sure to lose, a hero arrives from a different time—twenty years in the future! He defeats the evil Frieza with just a few quick flicks of his sword, along with Frieza’s father, King Cold. It seemed that the world was saved…but was it? The new stranger is a boy from the future who informs the fighters that a new evil will be born in the form of two powerful androids and that they would all perish, all except for Gohan, at the end of the battle. Using this precious knowledge, the fighters train for three years. They even go so far as to train inside a Time Chamber that allows for a year to pass with just one day’s time. It was here that Gohan unleashes his ability to transform into the legendary Super Saiyan—the legendary ability known throughout the universe. When the day approaches, however, the fighters learn that not only were the evil androids unleashed into the world, but there was another creature—Cell—who was supposedly the world’s ultimate fighter. He took on cells from all of the great fighters of the world and could use their own techniques against them. Luckily, with help from his father, Gohan was able to unleash a hidden power and transform into a second level Super Saiyan—thus making him the most powerful fighter on the planet—and he was finally able to conquer Cell. But again, it wasn’t without a price. Goku died that day in order to help give his son the courage to fight when there was no other way out, and Gohan lived the next several years without his father in his life. Also, a World Martial Arts Champion—Hercule Satan—had been at the battle. Due to broken transmission, Gohan’s victory wasn’t aired on television. Hercule took it upon himself to claim that he was responsible for saving the world and he became the “world’s hero”, instead of Gohan. As the next seven years passed, from the time when Gohan was eleven until he turned 18, he became very studious in order to help appease his mother’s wishes. He helped raise his younger brother Goten, who was born just after Cell had died. As the years continued, Chi Chi soon realized that her son would need to continue his education at a public school. In order to help avoid him being recognized as the boy who defeated Cell on public television, she wanted to send him away to a university of some kind—and this is how Gohan ended up at KSU. PB: Justin Chatwin (other suggestions are welcome, but in the manga and anime series, it’s often discussed that Gohan looks just like his father when he grows older—which is why I chose Justin Chatwin for his PB, as Chatwin portrays Goku in the new Dragonball Evolution movie around this same age). | ||||||||||
